TITLE: "Longing for Home"
MEDIUM: Acrylic
"My artwork merges the themes of empathy, hope, trauma, injustice and despair, presenting an illustration of life as a refugee and the hardships, challenges and emotional turmoil faced by them. The painting emphasizes the distinct contrast between the refugee’s barren, desolate, lifeless surroundings and his hopes and dreams for the safety and comfort of his home and family through the careful manipulation of warm and cool colours. The refugee’s solitary surroundings are depicted in cool colours like blues and purples to show the harsh reality and cold hearted world he lives in. On the other hand, the torch, which represents the last sliver of hope left in his life, is illuminated with warm colours like reds, oranges and yellows to show the safety and comfort of his dreams in the dim torchlight."

TITLE: "Breaking The Waves"
MEDIUM: Acrylic
"What if you break the life as you know it to be? Breaking The Waves illustrates and combines the concepts of fear, desperation, agony, but also hope. Hope that there’s a light at the end of that tunnel of pain and despair. And there is. There’s light at the top of the wave. The colossal wave that seems to be engulfing the tiny boat of refugees with the trauma of each one. The colour of each person represents different emotions or the different aspects of the country they’re fleeing from, with the maroon the boat is leaving behind, the fuel for their journey to freedom. Liberation."

TITLE: "Of the Crying Girl"
MEDIUM: Digital
"My piece is rather quite simple, a girl crying and in the background are refugees walking endlessly to find a home, an image you might often see when imagining a refugee. Through my piece I wanted to show a sole human emotion that can be expressed by anyone, crying. The main focus was that, a girl crying. To create a piece where the focus would be on the emotional aspect, I decided to make my piece black and white, emphasising the human nature of a girl crying. My intention was to create sympathy and to empathise that refugees are human and should be respected. To raise awareness, to provoke emotion."

CURRENT BID (BID AT LEAST $10 HIGHER) : $100
MEDIUM: Mixed Media
"The artwork consisted of handcuffs being broken to represent freedom as a refugee. The chain is also to symbolize the hardship refugees struggle through being separated from their families but also the oppression that they face as a refugee escaping from war in their country. To represent hope, the colour of sky blue and white birds is portrayed as symbolising their final route to happiness. I also decided to apply a deep dark purple colour to be able to represent the sorrow refugees go through as they leave their homes and families behind but also the fear they go through as their country goes through war."

"Refugees go through a lot. It is a fact not many wish to acknowledge, and one that in my experience often diminishes the harrowing trauma that grasps ordinary people stuck in the wrong circumstances, except where all the danger is ten times worse with the worst in people coming out. For children it is a very different thing. They are forced to grow up quicker than they want to, and deal with mortality and ethics when there are people much older who cannot come to terms with this fact. Instead of focusing on the abstract, I decided to focus on something very literal, to directly impact the viewer. I focused on the childhood long lost and distant, and the loneliness that can take over someone. I used acrylic because just as how plastic will take millions of years to biodegrade, it will take a lifetime to undo the trauma that can affect the growth of a child, a refugee.."

CURRENT BID (BID AT LEAST $10 HIGHER) : $100
MEDIUM: Acrylic
"I drew this painting to show what refugees see in their lives. Sometimes, there is a war, or a natural disaster in their home country and they are forced to evacuate. Most refugees travel by sea, and many do not survive. Storms come and go, some fall off. When they arrive, they feel like they are in a different world. So many new people and devices. The shards of broken mirrors show how hurt they are. "

"This artwork was produced by the thought of how we could help the refugees. By reading some of the articles during the research process, I felt that we should do something about them and help the kids/refugees. Although some organisations and charities are working on helping and raising awareness of refugees, there still are many refugees who are not being rescued and helped by them. Therefore, by the feeling of wanting to help as many refugees as I can, I created this artwork- trying to protect them by the big piece of glowing leaf which might symbolize peace. "

"The intention that I wanted to emphasize in my art piece is the “contrast between faith and despairing hope”. Death of one is recognized as a tragedy, but the deaths of many are just a toll. The contrast is significant with the use of colours in the hijab with the yellow to emphasize the sense of hope and ambition to believe in a better future, amidst the crisis of their circumstances. The red used is to portray the passion for hope, but also the concept of violence that is relevant in many of the refugees' experiences. "

"Refugees are a complicated and controversial topic. Therefore I really wanted to capture the essence of the backgrounds and struggles that refugees go through, in order to shine light on the strength of the individuals. Media coverage of the refugees has always been inconsistent, sometimes creating an incorrect stigma around them. Hence, I decided to take that media and present it in a way where the refugees are highlighted instead of erased or frowned upon. I mixed different media to produce a design that fit best to tell and present the stories of the refugees, their backgrounds and hardships. "

TITLE: "The Past and Present"
MEDIUM: Digital
"My artistic intention is to reflect the past of the fortunate and unfortunate refugees that have survived their tragedy. This includes refugees that started as a civilian living in a paradise until the war happened that turned them into a refugee. Or some refugee has been evacuated safely but has yet to forget about their past of war that he or she was involved in. "
